Your electricity distributor is the business responsible for the public electricity network in your area, including poles, wires and other network equipment.

Electricity distributors operate within defined geographic areas, so you generally cannot choose or change your distributor.

Your distributor is different from your electricity retailer or exempt seller. Your retailer or exempt seller sells electricity to you and sends your electricity bill.

Customers in embedded networks

If your premises are within an embedded network, electricity is delivered through a private network within your building, complex or site.

The embedded network owner or operator is responsible for the private network. A geographic electricity distributor remains responsible for the upstream public network supplying the site.

For faults or electrical emergencies within your embedded network, contact us first:

Active Utilities

Call: 1300 587 623, available 24 hours a day.

Savant Energy

Call: 1300 117 376, available 24 hours a day.

If the problem affects the upstream public network, you may also need to contact the electricity distributor for your area.

How do I find my distributor?

Your distributor’s name and contact details may be shown on your Active Utilities or Savant Energy electricity bill.

You can also use the AER’s electricity distributor directory to find the public electricity distributor for your area.

If you are unsure whether an outage or fault is within your embedded network or the public network, contact Active Utilities first.

If there is an immediate danger, such as fallen powerlines, damaged electrical equipment, smoke or fire:

  • keep well clear;

  • do not touch the equipment;

  • call Active Utilities or the applicable electricity distributor; and

  • call 000 if there is an immediate risk to health or safety.
