If your building has a centralised hot water system, Active Utilities or Savant Energy may bill you for the hot water service supplied to your premises.
The central system heats water for the building before distributing it to individual premises. Where your premises is separately metered, the meter records the volume of hot water delivered to your premises. You are not charged for another premises’ metered hot water usage.
The charges and descriptions shown on your bill will depend on the centralised hot water arrangements applying at your building.
What is a heating charge?
A heating charge relates to the cost of producing and supplying centralised hot water to your premises. It is generally calculated using your metered hot water consumption and the applicable rate.
Although gas may be used to heat water at some buildings, the heating charge is not necessarily a charge for a measured quantity of gas supplied directly to your premises. Centralised systems may use gas, electricity or another energy source.
Depending on the arrangements at your building, the applicable tariff may reflect costs associated with:
- the energy used to heat the water;
- operating and maintaining the centralised hot water system;
- metering and billing the service; and
- centralised hot water infrastructure and associated services.
Why can hot water charges differ between buildings?
Centralised hot water systems and pricing arrangements vary between buildings.
Some arrangements may include a usage charge and a separate daily charge. Others may recover the applicable costs through a usage charge without a separate daily charge.
Where a daily charge applies, it may contribute to the costs of providing, operating or maintaining the centralised hot water service.
Not every charge applies at every building. The descriptions, usage, rates and charges applying to your premises will be shown on your bill and in the applicable pricing information.
